Stockholm: Where Nordic History Meets Modern Cool

Spread across 14 islands connected by over 50 bridges, Stockholm is a city that instantly makes you feel welcome. It’s a place where medieval history sits comfortably next to cutting-edge design and a booming tech scene. Because water is everywhere, you are never far from a scenic view or a ferry ride.

Most visitors naturally gravitate toward Gamla Stan (the Old Town). It’s undeniably touristy, but for good reason—the winding cobblestone alleys, the Royal Palace, and the iconic orange and yellow buildings lining the main square are beautiful. My advice? Get a little lost in the side streets away from the main squares, and make sure to stop for a proper Swedish fika (a coffee and pastry break). The cinnamon buns (kanelbullar) here are legendary.

If you want to dive deeper into the city's character, head to Djurgården island. It’s essentially Stockholm's playground, home to the incredible Vasa Museum (which houses a massive 17th-century warship that was salvaged from the harbor) and the open-air museum Skansen. If you're into photography, do not miss the chance to ride the subway system—over 90 of the stations are decorated with incredible art, often called the world's longest art gallery.

Getting Around Stockholm

Arriving at the Airport: Most international flights land at Arlanda (ARN). You have a few choices to get into the city. The Arlanda Express train is the fastest (18 minutes) but can be pricey. If you want to save some money, the Flygbussarna airport coaches are frequent and comfortable and take about 45 minutes. Once in the city, download the SL app for the subway (Tunnelbana), buses, and trams. You cannot buy tickets with cash on board, so having the app or a physical travel card is essential.

Is Stockholm Safe for Tourists?

Stockholm is generally a very safe city, and violent crime is rare. The biggest thing you need to watch out for is pickpocketing in crowded tourist areas like the main train station, Gamla Stan, and Drottninggatan (the main shopping street). Keep your bags zipped and don't leave your phone sitting on café tables. Also, be careful when walking near the street—Stockholm has dedicated bike lanes, and locals ride fast. Step into a bike lane without looking, and you might get a very loud Swedish bell rung at you!
